Description of manuscript content:
In the Buddha’s time. The Buddha was residing at the Jetavanna Monastery in Savatthi. The Buddha mentioned about the dauntlessness of Anandha Thera while protecting the Buddha from the harming of Nalagiri, the excellent elephant, and described the story of a previous life. When Ananda Thera was born as a minister named Sumukha of a Phaya Hong (a king swan). Sumukha sacrificed his life to protect the king swan while being attached the hunter’s snare. The Buddha praised Anandha Thera as the one who did what others could not do.
Colophon:
Folio 28 on the recto side: In Culasakkarat hundred 97 (corresponding to CS 1197), a hap mot year, on the tenth waning day of eighth [lunar] month, the second day of the week (Monday), a ka pao day. The writing of this manuscript had been finished in the morning between 9.00-10.30 o’clock. Xiang (ex-novice) Pong together with his wife, siblings and parents had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Hòng Kham to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. Nibbāna paccayo hotu dhuvaṃ dhuvaṃ (May this be a condition for us to reach Nirvana, certainly).
