The manuscript defines thirteen Austere Practices (Dhutaṅgavatta) questioned upon by Phra Munin (Lord Milinda) to Phra Nāgasena. Lord Milinda asked him what people should have done to get free from suffering and attain Nirvana. Phra Nāgasena answered that people depended on their own accumulated merit to achieve it; that condition could be compared to competent archery soldiers who were instructed by good trainers, thus advancing their skills and being able to shoot more precisely and masterly.
