Description of manuscript content:
In Theravada Buddhism, the Pātimokkha (fundamental precepts) makes up the basic code of monastic discipline, consisting of 227 rules for fully ordained monks. It is a part of the Suttavibhaṅga, a division of the Vinayapiṭaka, one of the collections of Buddhist canonical texts. According to the Vinaya, twice a month on the fifteenth day of the waxing and waning moons, the monks must assemble in the sim to listen to a recitation of the Pātimokkha. “The monks of Luang Prabang congregate every fortnight to solemnly recite the Pātimokkha: a reminder of the precepts and rules they obey, and also an occasion that provides a means of strengthening their community.
