The content tells after attaining enlightenment as the Blessed One, firstly the Buddha delivered sermons to monks and lay people. The Buddha teachings are called Suttanta doctrine. Later, when some monks made mistakes, the Buddha prescribed Vinaya (the Discipline). The Buddha delivered Abhidhamma in Tavatimsa heaven in the seventh years after his enlightenment. The first training rule and the origin of monastic law was given while the Buddha was giving a teaching to people in Vesali. Sudinna, the son of a prominent merchant, came and approached the assembly and sat down to one side. After the teaching, Sudinna asked the Buddha for his ordination as a monk. Later Monk Sudinna had sexual intercourse with his former wife. Then the Buddha laid down the first training rule thus: “If a monk has sexual intercourse, he is expelled and excluded from the community.”
