Once the Buddha was dwelling at the Jetavana Monastery in Savatthi. When the night was far spent, a certain deity whose surpassing splendor illuminated the entire Jeta Grove, came to the presence of the Buddha and drawing near, respectfully saluted the Buddha and stood to one side. Standing thus, he addressed the Buddha in verses: many deities and men, yearning after good, have pondered on Blessings. Pray, tell me the Supreme Blessing. Not to be associated with fools, to associate with the wise and honour those who are worthy of honour; this addressed the Buddha in verse. Then the Buddha delivered a sermon of 38 kinds of Blessings.
