In the Buddha’s time, while residing at Jetavan in Savatthi the Buddha was asked by King Mahanama about what result of merit to the ones who gave alms-giving. Then the Buddha delivered a sermon describing the merit derived from giving various gifts. For examples: the one who made a Buddha statue as a gift will get merit for ten kappa (eon); the one who made a manuscript as a gift will get merit for nine kappa; the one who hadbeen ordained as a monk will get merit for eight kappa; the one who built a stupa as a gift will get merit for seven kappa; and so on…
