Description of manuscript content:
While residing at the Buppharam Monastery in Savatthi, the Buddha spoke to King Pasendhi about the benefits derived from worshiping the flags of the Triple Gem. The Buddha gave an example. In the time of the Vipassi Buddha, a troubled couple with the most ardent religious faith in the Triple Gem made a flag in order to worship the Triple Gem. While making the flag, the husband suddenly died. Because of his faithful mind, he entered in Tavatimsa Heaven as a divinity and possessed many heavenly treasures.
Colophon:
Folio 7 on the verso side: In Culasakkarat (CS) 1284, on the tenth waning day of the seventh [lunar] month, the writing [of this manuscript] was finished at the time of the morning drum (between 7.30–9.00 o’clock). Ai (“elder brother”) Pan is the sponsor for the making of [this manuscript entitled] Sòng Thung Sai (Benefits Derived from Making a Flag Putting on Sand) to support the Teachings of Gotama Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May my wishes come true. May this be a condition for us to reach Nirvāna, continuously and forever.
Other notes:
Folio 8 on the recto side: Benefits derived from the making of a sand flag and an iron flag.
